The Nazca Culture is one of the most renowned of that period. In the year 1900, Archaeologist Max Uhle investigated it for the first time. The Nazca, lines and figures outlined in the desert, are Uhle's best known work.
Some investigators assure that these lines and figures were made in the Late era of the Nazca Culture that correspond to the VI century AC.
The Nazca Lines were discovered in 1926 by Toribio Mejía Quispe, Paul Kosok, Hans Horkheimer, and, Doctor María Reiche who studied them. Reiche has lived in the region for more than 50 years, studying and investigating the origin. |

There are many hypotheses regarding the function of these lines and figures, assuring they were ceremonial roads, calendars, places where rituals for the dead took place. Furthermore, they have even said that these figures were done by extra terrestrials. Nevertheless, the most accepted theories are Doctor María Reiche's and Paul Kosok's, who assured that those lines accomplished the task of a ritual agricultural calendar, representing the movement of the planets and stars.
The Nazca Lines have a reddish color and are divided into three categories: the first lines have different sizes that can cover from 30 meters up to 9 kilometers; the second lines, extensive triangular and trapezoid spaces that cover 200 to 500 meters; and, the third category, according to the different forms of their figures, are animals, plants or spiral forms. There is a viewpoint from where one may appreciate the figures of “the hand” and “the tree”.
