History
On March 1st, 1977, the National Manu Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by MAB - UNESCO. The Manu Biosphere Reserve occupies a total approximate area of 19,098 km2.  It is the largest biosphere in the Amazon. The conservation state of the forests, the diversity of the ecosystems and species and the cultural diversity that includes Indian populations are remarkable. At the MBR there are three areas (see map): The Central Area, the Manu National Park, is an area destined to the intangible protection of the biological resources and to the cultural integrity of the Indian populations, that consists of 41 394 natives.

The Recuperation Area, is the Manu's Reserved Area.  It is a tampon area of the

Manu Biosphere Reserve. Likewise, it also constitutes a natural protected area linked in the management to the Manu National Park, thus considered strategically as a conservation unit. It has been an area/zone for tourist use and investigation. The Transition Zone or Multiple Use Zone is the Cultural Zone, where there are human settlements (usually settlers from the Sierra), who are gradually acquiring more conscience regarding their position and participate actively in sustainable development projects. Both areas, the National Park and the Reserve Zone, besides some areas of public domain, were acknowledged by UNESCO  as the Manu Biosphere Reserve. On December 1987, the Manu National Park was included in the list of Wold Heritage.

Due to the natural isolation, Manu shelters many national and worldwide endangered species, such as the Jaguar, the Spectacled Bear, the Giant River Otter, and, the White and Black Cayman. It is estimated to shelter the largest and most varied existing bio-diversity in the planet.
